Last Week's Frugal Wins and Not so Much

Image
I have really stunk at keeping the blog updated, my apologies. Life has been crazy busy. In February, we packed up my Grandmother's apartment and moved her 5 hours into our home. Things are going very well and my spur of the moment road trips 5 hours away are now none existent, which is the biggest frugal win of the entire year so far. My youngest son was confirmed into the congregation of our church. this is a huge blessing because our beloved pastor is due to retire next month. My son has graduated from High School. We all survived his party, whew so glad to have that done. It was fun to see everyone, but a bit stressful. I graduated with my Bachelor's in Health and Human Services from my online college. Also, I have started my Master's in Public Health. Which all may sound expensive but my employer offers tuition reimbursement. Now for the frugal wins for last week. I put in our 'garden' which consists of a few little rows of green onions, spinach and tw...

Chickens, chickens and yet more chickens

Image
About 2 years ago, my cousin's kingerten class she was teaching, hatched eggs. They were so cute but grew and grew and GREW. Lisa lives with in the city limits so she had to find a home for her babies. We invited them in our home coop with open arms. Well, it has been quite the learning process with these three additions to our flock. They are bantam Ameraucanas and the go broody in a drop of a hat. With that said, I have baby chickens again, they are the cutest little things and the females are such good mamas! Here is Rita and her five offspring. See the little ones peeping out. We have about 28 chickens right now, with 10 that are hens and old enough to lay. We get on average 9 eggs a day. I have two regular buyers for $2.50 a dozen, which goes for feed.

Fun with Photos

Everyday I go out to gather eggs and I some times have to hunt for them. It sometimes is just like an Easter morning egg hunt. Every day for about a month now I find an egg in a bucket that hangs off the barn door and today I caught the culprit in action. I even was able to run to the house for the camera. Not exactly what Colonial Sanders thought of when he said a bucket of chicken.

My chickens are working

My chickens are working hard for me. I went out to the coop and found these eggs. I noticed how very large the white egg is! My little Lisa is working over time, this photo shows her normal sized eggs along with the LARGE egg she produced today. Lisa is a California Grey Leghorn and eared herself an extra piece of bread today.
